Redefining ‘patient-centred’ care

Problems with the proper emptying, or incontinence, of the bowel and bladder are some of the more embarrassing and taboo everyday occurrences experienced by Australians all around the country. Incontinence is the silent epidemic of the 21st century and if left untreated can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.

Problems ‘down there’ take more than one area of expertise to find a solution and give a patient long-term and sustainable relief.

The pelvic floor – a buzz word often associated with kegels and activating the muscles you need to ‘hold in a wee’ – encompasses the bowel, bladder and reproductive organs for women and men.

Understanding the intricacies across each of these different areas is not a speciality on its own and requires a collaborative approach from respective physicians and medical experts. And that’s where we come in.

We are Dr Alexandra Mowat, Dr Andrea Warwick, Dr Chris Gillespie and Dr Trina Kellar, and we’re the founders of the Queensland Pelvic Floor Centre.

We’re driven by a desire to revolutionise the way patients with pelvic floor issues are diagnosed and treated, and share a deep calling to improve the wide community’s understanding and recognition of people living with pelvic floor conditions.

Our approach is holistic, by centralising everything in one place and collaborating on every case to ensure our patients can experience a better quality of life as soon as possible rather than suffer in silence.

No longer will these issues:

  • be considered ‘in your head’
  • be a ‘right of passage’ to becoming a mum or ageing
  • keep you indoors until 10am until the bathroom ritual is done, or have you constantly checking the nearest exit and bathroom as if you’re an MI6 agent
  • have you hide in shame because of an accident in public
  • keep you from the activities you loved, or playing with your children or grandchildren

No longer will you be told ‘there’s nothing else to be done’. There is.

Every. Single. Patient is at the core of everything we do; providing a safe, understanding and comfortable space for people to be heard, and finally developing a correct care plan that gives peace of mind, and empower each patient to lead a happier and healthier life.
